Coping with work and Family - For moms in STEM

Most mothers wish they could be a stay at home mom or have a job with enough flexibility that they could spend more time with their children and raise them throughout the day. This is what most women thought it would be like when they grew up.

The reality is that most moms have a busy schedule. In fact in the USA, half of the work force comprises of working moms. Studies show that 4 out of every 5 homes has moms that work.

Many of us are ambitious successful strong women, who want to be the best they can be at work, but at what cost. The overwhelming stress and long hours are enough to drive anyone crazy. Add to that your husbands/partners that need your attention. And they do need your need the attention, you wouldn't want them getting that from their smiling secretaries right.

This is a problem for women that work in demanding fields like technology. You can spend days troubleshooting for 8 hours only to go home to adorable children wanting to tell you about their day and doting husband ready to spend the rest of the night together. When do we find time for ourselves, as we give our all to our work and our family.

So despite all the stress and commitments, you need to relax, below are some tips on how to balance your life a working mother

Take care of yourself: In as much as you need to take care if your family, you also need to look out for yourself. You need to treat yourself to something special once in a while. Take a bubble bath, drive around, take a walk. You should also take some breaks, just a few minutes of you time. Don't burn yourself out.

Set calendar times each day: It's easier to cope when you have your day planned or even better, your week planned. At the beginning of every week take time to plan the next 7 days. This will enable you to know what you need to do and avoid surprises.

Take an hour to relax at night while going to bed: Before going to bed, that is after tucking the children in, you and your spouse should take some time, probably an hour to unwind. You don't need to wear yourselves out.

Find a purpose: When on a journey, a purpose or goal comes in handy as it will enable you to focus your energies towards meaningful tasks. This could be at your job, maybe a particular project needs special attention. Always have a purpose. What that is will depend on you.

Get the family to help you out: You shouldn't do everything alone, your spouse should help out with some tasks. Like taking care of a particular task in the morning, ironing clothes and stuff like that. If you have older children they too should help you out, that is if the are of age.

Get help of a maid service: If your schedule is very tight and normal household chores are starting to be a problem, you might want to consider hiring a maid service to help you out. Always hire people with excellent track records and who have experience, you wouldn't want to hire a thief or someone shady.

Read books that will help you stay positive: There are lots of books written by women who have the same problems as you. It wouldn't hurt for you to take time to read them, you might learn a thing or two from their experience. Motivational books can help too.

Know where you stand in the company: Although a career is good, nothing should come before family. F your job is making you miss out on important things like birthdays, PTAs then there's something wrong
